What is Hypnosis?

What is Hypnosis?

Have you ever been hypnotised or what do you know about hypnosis?

You maybe surprised to know that you have probably already been hypnotised in the past, because all hypnosis is self-hypnosis, a natural state of mind that we experience quite regularly.  For instance, have you ever driven and had no recollection of how you have got there, stopping at traffic lights, roundabouts or even slowing for speed cameras?  Well that is a form of hypnosis called highway hypnosis.  Something like a daydream where your mind wanders, but it is subconsciously completely focused on your wellbeing.

Hypnosis is a focused state of concentration, you are always mentally focused and in control, able to open your eyes and talk and make yourself comfortable.  At all times, no matter what level of hypnosis you accept you will always be able to hear what is going on around you.  Although you can appear to be completely relaxed as if you are asleep, it is a common misconception, the word sleep is used in hypnosis because people automatically associate sleep with closing their eyes and relaxing.

Hypnosis isn't magic or mind control, it is merely suggestion, you can choose to enter into hypnosis or not, and if you do, you will always accept to come out safely and in control at all times.  We all have a certain level of suggestibility and that is how sales and advertising works.  Hypnosis raises that level of suggestibility.  Most peoples experience with hypnosis is stage hypnosis, the hypnotist brings that part of your mind that unconsciously dreams to a conscious level and uses suggestion, the participant will either accept that suggestion or dismiss it, if it is not agreeable to them.

Hypnotherapy on the other hand uses therapeutic techniques within hypnosis to communicate with the subconscious.  So, if you imagine the mind as a computer, the front screen and applications being the conscious mind, a place where you have access to and can make changes.  The hard drive being the subconscious, a place where you have limited access, a place where all activity is stored.  A computer can get overloaded with cookies, malware, viruses etc. that affects its performance.  Similarly, the subconscious can get weighed down with negative information and emotions that are held onto but are no longer required.

As you would send a computer to a qualified technician to resolve issues you cannot reach, a hypnotherapist does the same by guiding you to past memories, events, and experiences that you may not be aware of that affect your conscious behaviour.  The techniques used help guide you to resolve issues and make positive changes for the future.

It does not offer cures for medical conditions, but can alleviate pain and symptoms.
